The Red Light District Gets Freaky

When you ask, most people know about the Red Light District Amsterdam Netherlands or at least it’s reputation. Very few people haven’t heard of the place. The objective of this blog post is to provide you information and serve as a Red Light District Amsterdam Netherlands map of the place so you can make the most of your experience. If there is one place that rivals Las Vegas’ reputation as, “Sin City”, that would be Amsterdam’s Red Light District. Almost any vice you can imagine can be found here. Drinking, Smoking, Sex, Chocolate and much, much more. If it’s sinful or playful, you better believe that it’s here at Amsterdam’s Red Light District.

THE RED LIGHT DISTRICT HISTORY

Amsterdam evolved from a small fishing village to a major trade port back in the 14th century. During its peak, commodities from all over the world poured in, ranging from tea to spices. The Red Light District Amsterdam Netherlands maps itself in the heart of Europe as a major player in trade during that era. Because of this, sailors would flock to Amsterdam’s shores looking for women and it was there that they found a city that was more than happy to oblige.  By the 17th century, brothel businesses were flourishing.

During the Napoleon era when he occupied Holland, he required these sex workers to have regular checkups a couple times a week in order to thwart a syphilis outbreak with his soldiers. Around 1900, the government outlawed prostitute to no avail. Even during its prohibition, the trade continued by simply operating underground. Eventually it proved that all attempts to abolish the trade were futile; the government reversed its decision and allowed prostitution provided ladies weren’t displaying their wares in the doorways. This marked the beginning of the window trade. Girls would beckon their customers through a window with a curtain. In the 1960’s, the sex trade became an attraction for the Red Light District Amsterdam Netherlands.

THE RED LIGHT DISTRICT, WHAT TO SEE

Here is the Red Light District Amsterdam Netherlands map of what there is to see. There are huge selections of shops, restaurants, as well as other things that will demand your attention. I usually like to start at the Oude Church. It’s pretty recognizable figure and it’s easy to spot from a far. The church is quite impressive, especially during the night time. There is a clock at the top that is lit at night. The church is quite beautiful, although a good power washing would probable do wonders for it. A number of the buildings in Amsterdam look pretty dirty. A good start would be to take a tour of this place. Ironically, exactly opposite of the church are windows with ladies and their wears on display. I supposed this is a good thing as a sinner can go immediately to confession after doing their evil deed.

THE RED LIGHT DISTRICT MAP OF CHEESE SHOPS

A Red Light District Amsterdam Netherlands map of cheese shops will reveal that there are a number of places selling cheese throughout the city. Definitely stop by one of these shops and sample some of the most amazing cheese you will ever taste in your lifetime. The cheese range in price from not too bad to the ridiculous. A friend of mine had me purchase some cheese for her that cost 30 Euros. I’m sure for a number of you, that may not be too pricey, but I found it astonishing that cheese could ever cost that much. Most of these shops offer cheese and wine tasting for a fee. It’s a nice relaxing experience where you will learn about cheese and Amsterdam’s history with it as well as taste some of the best cheese Amsterdam has to offer along with sipping on a smooth glass of wine. Old Amsterdam Cheese is conveniently located in the Red Light District.

THE RED LIGHT DISTRICT MAP OF CHOCOLATE

There are a number of stores that sell chocolate. The Red Light District Amsterdam Netherlands map will show that there are plenty of shops with chocolate for sell. I didn’t really spend much time in these shops so I can’t offer much details as to how they are set up. One shop that I did visit is near Oude Church. They have a large selection chocolate on display, some of which you can sample.  It’s amazing as well.

THE RED LIGHT DISTRICT MAP OF SEX SHOPS

For something different, I’ve included a Red Light District Amsterdam Netherlands map of one of the sex shops in the area. I’m sure you will discover things that you didn’t even know existed. I did. One of these shops actually had a pole that you could swing on. After attempting to swing on the pole, I had a new found respect for pole dancers. It really takes a lot of strength to support yourself on one of those poles. If you are looking to see some of the weirdest things in life, you simply have to look no further than your friendly neighborhood sex shop. One shop I was in was actually selling muzzles! Maybe this is a common thing, but it was new to me.

THE RED LIGHT DISTRICT MAP OF COFFEE SHOPS

If you are a coffee drinker, take caution when visiting a coffee shop if you’re not a weed smoker. For a moment, I forgot I was in Amsterdam when I thought it would be nice to sit down, chill, and enjoy a nice cup of coffee. As soon as I entered the building, I reversed course immediately. I didn’t realize that they sold weed in the coffee shop, probably because I’m not a smoker. If you’re like me and simply looking for a nice place to relax and have coffee, there are a few places that don’t sell weed with their coffee. You just need to seek them out. We found a nice place not too far from the Rijks Museum that I definitely recommend it. I provided a Red Light District Amsterdam Netherlands map of that coffee shop.

THE RED LIGHT DISTRICT MAP OF GIRLS IN THE BOOTHS

Of course, you absolutely cannot come to the Red Light District Amsterdam Netherlands and not visit the girls in the booth. You have to go simply to experience something that you have never seen before. Whatever your type is, you will find it there. Remember, there are no photo’s allowed, but if you do decide to take a picture, you might want to find a booth that faces a canal. Go on the other side of the canal, opposite of the girl in the booth and snap your photo. I’m just saying… If I were to take a photo of a girl in the booth, that’s what I would do. Allegedly there are cops out there to dissuade you from taking photos, although I never saw one. The booths are everywhere so they are not hard to find. For giggles, I suggest you go up to one of the girls and inquire how much for her services. I would love to get one on video, but I’m not so ballsy. These girls work all hours of the day and when they get a customer, they simply close the curtain in their booth and take care of their business. It’s quite interesting to see. These booths are scattered throughout the area. I’ve included a general Red Light District Amsterdam Netherlands map of where to look for these girls although it’s not hard.
